Cuenca, Spain (02/11/2025) — In a bold move to reshape its cultural and tourism landscape, the Spanish city of Cuenca is launching Cuenca es Cine (Cuenca is Cinema), an ambitious initiative designed to position the city as a key player in the international film industry. Spearheaded by the Cuenca-based production company Sorenfilms, in partnership with a roster of high-profile national and international production houses—including Mono Con Pistolas, Estudio V, Gessa Producciones, Hackeo Producciones, Spencer Productions (USA), Gosua Films, Amca Producciones, and Sissi Films—the project aims to turn the city’s scenic beauty into a cinematic magnet.
With support from both local and regional institutions, including Junta de Castilla La-Mancha (regional), Ayuntamiento de Cuenca (City Council), and Diputación de Cuenca (regional), as well as the Castilla La-Mancha Film Commission, the initiative will see the filming of three major audiovisual projects in Cuenca’s stunning natural landscapes and historical sites throughout 2025. This marks the beginning of a transformative new chapter for Cuenca, which is set to become a key destination for filmmakers seeking to capture not only its picturesque vistas but also its rich cultural heritage.
“As prominent filmmakers like Carlos Saura and Juan Antonio Bardem so well depicted, Cuenca is a city that captures hearts from the very first glance,” said Leticia Moreno, CEO of Sorenfilms. “Our goal is for Cuenca to not only become a must-visit tourist destination but to establish itself as a go-to location for major international film productions. With Cuenca es Cine, we’re opening a new door for the city, connecting cinema with tourism in a way that will attract film professionals from across the globe.”
The initiative is more than just a promotional campaign. It’s a strategic move to elevate Cuenca as a cinematic hub, tapping into its breathtaking landscapes and historic architecture. The goal is to position Cuenca as a prime location for big-budget productions while simultaneously boosting its profile as a year-round tourist destination.
Beyond the immediate tourism benefits, Cuenca es Cine seeks to establish the city as a key player in the global film industry. By showcasing Cuenca as a top-tier filming location, the project is expected to generate significant economic impact, creating jobs and spurring growth within both the local tourism and audiovisual sectors.
The project will also benefit from the expertise of its international production partners, who will bring a wealth of experience in managing large-scale shoots. With crews from around the world, Cuenca es Cine promises to create a unique synergy that will help establish the city as a go-to destination for international filmmakers in the years to come.
“This is an incredible opportunity for Cuenca,” said Yolanda Rozalén, Coordinator of Culture for Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha. "This initiative highlights the value of our city and opens new perspectives not only for the cultural and tourism sectors but also for the local economy. Moreover, it has the potential to transform not only the future of our city but of our entire region."
To kick off the initiative, Sorenfilms is set to bring the following three major projects to Cuenca, including the previously announced “Al Final Todo Va a Estar Bien,” directed by Néstor Ruiz Medina. The film stars Money Heist’s Esther Acebo, María Lázaro, and Alex Sorian Brown. Shooting will take place in Cuenca and Andalucía. The film is a co-production between Mono Con Pistolas and Sorenfilms.
Next up is “Serena Y,” directed by Italian director Francesco Cocco. The film stars Goya-nominated Vicente Vergara, Rosa Alvarez, Alex Sorian Brown, and newcomer Jorge Galván Dominguez. Produced by Sorenfilms, director Angel Gomez’s production company Estudio V, Mono con Pistolas and Hackeo Producciones in co-production with the American Spencer Productions, the film explores the emotional complexities of human relationships. Filming begins later this month.
To round out the slate, Cecilia Gessa will direct “Una Conversación Pendiente” at the end of March. The film, starring Goya-nominated Carlos Bardem and Goya-winner Alberto Ammann, delves into themes of love, regret, and reconciliation. This co-production includes Gessa Producciones, AMCA Producciones, Gosua Films, Sissi Films, Hackeo Producciones, and Sorenfilms.
"These projects, along with the Festival Internacional de Cine Comedia de Cuenca, are just the beginning of what could turn Cuenca and its region into a cultural and cinematic destination for Spanish and international production companies and projects from all over that discover the wealth and cultural heritage of the province of Cuenca," mentioned Marian Martínez, Provincial Deputy of Culture of Cuenca.
